Abstract

The personal dimension of the activity of Yevhen Kharlampiyovych Chykalenko (1861–1929) was carried out from the origin of his life to the beginning of the 20th century. During this period of life, he received not only the necessary general and professional education and the necessary practical knowledge, skills, and abilities for management. The main thing is that he achieved freedom of action and movement. Psycho-emotional achievement of this kind Ye. Chykalenko aimed at achieving their own economic independence through a series of intellectually determined organizational experiments in economic activity. Tracing this period of Ye. Chykalenko’s life, we note that his ukrainocentrism was formed under the influence of several important factors. Psycho-emotional achievement of this kind Ye. One of them is perceived as a home, rather, family upbringing, which has its roots in the times of the Zaporozhian Sich. It is a kind of internal vaccination against being moscovian, which they tried to carry out against Eugene in the English boarding house in Odesa. The next one was studying in a junior high school formed from a boarding school, which opened up Ukrainian cultural and intellectual horizons for him. Further, studying at the Yelisavetgrad Real School broadened these horizons and introduced Ukrainian song, poetry, the printed word, and theater. It is worth emphasizing that the educational and intellectual environment of Yelisavetgrad helped Yevhen to transform his spontaneous Ukrainianness into a conscious national feeling. Keeping in touch with his family, he decided to get an agronomic education. A two-year search for a suitable educational institution led him to Kharkiv University. He studied agronomy at the Department of Natural Sciences of his Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In the course of his life and studies, Yevhen took an active part in the circles of conscious Ukrainian youth, which ended up with 5 years of expulsion under public police supervision to the Pereshory village. He joined the management of inherited estates and carried out a number of organizational and agrarian experiments, which allowed him to direct intellectual and economic independence to charity, philanthropic, publishing, and journalistic activities in the service of Ukraine
